Psychometric Adaptation of the Text-Copying Test from the EVALEO 6–15 Battery among Fourth-Grade Primary-School Pupils: A Study of the Validity and Reliability of the Test Items

Abstract

This study aimed to adapt the text-copying test from the EVALEO 6–15 battery to the
linguistic and cultural features of Arabic, working with fourth-grade primary-school
pupils in Algeria, and to examine the test's psychometric properties in terms of validity
and reliability. The sample consisted of 101 pupils drawn from four primary schools in
Algiers and Setif. The adaptation followed the principle of functional equivalence,
preserving the cognitive and linguistic dimensions measured by the original test.
Content validity was assessed through expert judgment, which yielded an overall
agreement rate of 91.5%. Construct validity was examined using Pearson correlation
coefficients, which revealed statistically significant relationships among the various
indicators of written performance. Internal-consistency reliability was measured with
Cronbach's alpha, which reached 0.87, indicating good internal consistency. The results
show that the adapted test assesses written performance well and detects individual
differences and copying difficulties among fourth-grade pupils. The study concludes
that the adapted Arabic version is a promising preliminary tool for assessing writing
difficulties in speech and language therapy practice in Algeria.
